Abstract
The introduction of SONET/SDH
transport, ATM and other fast packet switching standards in the Public
Switched Telephone Network has had a major impact on the planning and engineer-ing
of these networks. Traditional methods of network design based on tandem
hierarchies and Erlang-B/C dimensioning techniques are in need of substantial
revision if not complete replacement. The well-understood economies of
scale for the copper-based technologies no longer apply to the new facilities
to be planned and traffic to be modeled. The key design issues of survivability,
fast restoration, quality of service, and robsutness that automatically
character-ized the telephony network need to be explicitly accounted for.
In this presentation we
will first review the planning, survivability and optimization problems
that the SONET/SDH standard has given rise to. We will then outline
the optimization-based heuristics that have been successfully implemented
for economic planning of SONET/SDH networks of Bellcore client companies.
Next we will describe the traffic research work that gave rise to long
range dependence and self-similar traffic models for data networks and
the most promising successors to Erlang-B/C models of circuit-switched
networks. Finally, as examples of new planning problems associated
with broadband networks, we will describe the ATM network design.
The problem shows a unique interplay of the new non-linear traffic models
with mixed integer programming. We will conclude with a summary of our
imple-menta--tions and report on their computational efficiencies.

Iraj Saniee is Director
of the Network Design and Traffic Research Group at Bellcore, Morristown,
New Jersey, USA. He joined Bellcore shortly after its divestiture
from AT&T in February 1985 and has worked in the Information Sciences
Lab, Network Reserach Lab, and Technology Systems Lab, as Director and
Senior Research Scientist, Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, and
Member of Technical Staff in the past 12 years. He pioneered the
development of modern “lite” versions of network design tools used by the
Bellcore client companies that employ domain-specific optimization-based
heuristics for large-scale problems associated with survivability planning,
SONET/SDH and ATM networks. In the past few years he has investigated
robustness of mixed-integer optimization problems in network planning under
demand uncertainty and has designed and implemented software tools for
ATM and Frame Relay facility and traffic planning. Dr. Saniee was
the leader of the 1994 runner-up team for INFORM’s Edelman International
Prize in Management Science and has published in IEEE, SIAM, and INFORMS
journals. He received his B.A. and M.A. in Math and Ph.D. in Operations
Research from Cambridge University in 1979, 1980, and 1984, respectively.
